Study of the directions of service in men’s volleyball high level

Abstract

The aim of this study was to design and to apply an observation instrument of the service in high level men’s volleyball. This instrument was trying to differentiate the destination zones of service near to the side lines and the end line, and the directions of  services related to the same ones, trying to verify if the destination zone and direction were associating of significant and positive form efficiently. 1891 services were considered in this study, all team services of men’s volleyball high level realized during the season 2004/2005. The variables of study were origin zone, destination zone, direction and efficiency of services. The results showed that more 20% of services were realized to less than one meter of the end line, being the services realized near to the side lines. The direct point service was associated significantly and positively with services realized near to the side lines and the end line of the court, and with directions of side line services and service at the bottom of the line.
